It is far more effective to focus on the rushee's interests, than your own 
interests.  Try and determine their interests from things in their room, or
their clothes, or anything that might be a great conversation piece.  The most
effective Rushers are able to make conversation on just about anything
in sight.  Once you get a feel for the things that interest them, explore
further for effectiveness.  Also, you can often learn more about people
and their values from the things that make them tick.
