ARC Simple IRA Plan Sponsor Site Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) Match

Riverside Gun Club, Hudson, MA.

The CMP is a private corporation funded by our government. It's primary purpose is to encourage marksmanship, which it does in a large part by selling surplus military firearms to Americans. That's right, you too can purchase an M-1 Garand and other government surplus firearms if you meet certain criteria.

One major criteria for your M-1 purchase is documented participation in a high-power match sponsored by a CMP-affiliated organization. Several clubs in MA offer these matches throughout the year. My club -- Riverside, in Hudson MA -- holds several matches a year. The match is open to the public.  In the past several Epsilon alumni have shot a CMP match together.  If there's enough interest we could coordinate and find another match to shoot.

What's the match like?

The CMP match consists of 50 rounds shot as follows:

  • 10 rounds slow fire, offhand (standing), 100 yds.
  • 10 rounds rapid fire, sitting, 200 yds.
  • 10 rounds rapid fire, prone, 200 yds.
  • 20 rounds slow fire, prone, 600 yds.
Riverside has a 100 yard rifle range; the longer distances are simulated by shooting at scaled down targets. The match is typically shot with service rifles such as the M-1, or their civilian equivalents -- the M-1A (semi-auto version of the M-14) and the AR-15 (semi-auto version of the M-16). Junior shooters also use the M-1 Carbine. Riverside will provide M-1s and everything else you need to shoot the match. They have a short a clinic before the match for people unfamiliar with the event and/or the rifle. Beginners are welcome!

The Details:

Riverside CMP matches are detailed here.

  • Location: Riverside Gun Club, Hudson MA. Clubhouse phone: 978-568-8175.
  • Directions: I-495 to exit 26 (Rt 62). Turn right at bottom of exit and take 62 East thru downtown Hudson. Rt 62 turns left at the Wilkins St. traffic light after you get thru downtown - turn left and stay on 62. The club is 1/4 mi down, on the left. There's a big blue sign. The range is thru the gate to the right of the clubhouse. Click here for a map and personalized directions.
  • Cost: $30. Entry fee covers everything. The club supplies the rifle, ammo, targets, eye and ear protection.

What to Bring:

Even if you plan on using the club's equipment you may want to consider bringing some of these items.

  • Your own rifle (and ammo, if not a .30-06)
  • Shooting glasses
  • Ear muffs
  • Shooting scope/binoculars
  • Shooting mat. Carpet remnants work well.
  • Shooting jacket. Provides add'l upper body rigidity/stability. Any jacket you can lay on the ground with and tighten up works well. I use my jean jacket with a sweatshirt underneath to get a tight fit.
  • Shooting glove. For offhand support. I've used a both light leather glove and a work glove like you would use to work in the yard.
  • Hooded sweatshirt. Yes, even in the heat. The hood keeps hot brass from falling down your shirt (ouch - been there, done that!) and the sweatshirt helps give you a snug fit into your jacket.
  • Hat with a brim. Baseball cap keeps hot brass from flying in your face, falling behind your shooting glasses.
  • High-tops. Shoes you can lace up add stability to your ankles. Leather work boots are good, canvas sneakers are better than nothing.
  • Watch with a stopwatch/timer on it. Useful during slow fire to pace yourself without having to strain to see the master timer.
  • Pen, paper
  • Staple gun
  • Water
Comments:

I've partcipated in a few of these matches before. I've always enjoyed them. Shooting with/against people I know will make it all the more fun. Use this space to ask questions, add comments, etc.

Warning: If you talk the talk, be ready to walk the walk!

This sounds like a lot of fun! I don't plan on buying my own
gun anytime soon. What are the typical costs to rent or use
club guns? Are there lots of gun clubs that have rentals and
such? How about any other equipment? If I plan on shooting
2-3 times a year, does it make sense to buy?

What are the laws regarding target shooting in the woods?
Can't we find a safe place and setup some targets? It would
be much cheaper and we could decide our own rules.

If you've got some private woods we can use I'd be all for it. Note I said
private woods and not private Woodies!

I'm signed up as well. Let the competition begin? What are your
previous scores, or did you miss the target on all 50 shots?
